Sketchfab

Publish, share or embed your 3D models, Online

The Internet is in 2D, & perhaps this is what the fellas running this Internet startup called Sketchfab are trying to change. To go from a rather “flat” world to one that is in 3D.

Sketchfab is a web service that allows users to publish, share & embed interactive 3D models online, in real-time, without plugin.

Take a look at the video below to learn more:

So, who is it for?

Sketchfab may be used by artists, designers, engineers, brands, architects, 3D scanners, or even used by just about anybody who wants to browse a through a new media – in this case, 3D.

This WebGL-based tool allows 3D modelers to show almost any object in full 3D with full vantage control. It even allows you to embed 3D content into web pages, so this can be one way website owners can enhance their own site.

The founders of this new startup are Cédric Pinson & Alban Denoyel,  both experts in the 3D domain. Sketchfab doesn’t require any third application installation to work, you just need a WebGL compatible browser.

To upload your 3D model, all you need to do is create a free account & choose from the 27 available formats to upload. Once the Sketchfab server processes it, your 3D model will be displayed in real-time in the brower. You can add meta information & share your model on the web. Plus, you can embed the Sketchfab viewer on any web page, just like you would a YouTube video.

Depending on your needs, there are two types of service available on Sketchfab – free & paid. If you want to share your models privately or need bigger uploads you can upgrade to the Pro version. Plus, schools & cultural institution or even non-profit organizations can get a discount.
