Twitch console gaming broadcasts spread to Xbox One

TwitchtvThe much-awaited & hyped Twitch console gaming broadcasts for Xbox One are here, timed perfectly to coincide with the launch of Titanfall.

This is yet another milestone in Twitch.tv’s impressive march towards complete global domination of the console gaming broadcast arena.

Twitch now has 45 million visitors & more than a million active broadcasters per month, & that’s before the flood of Xbox One users join the crowd. Together, all these users end up sharing & watching an average of more than 13 billion minutes of gameplay every month.

That’s an incredibly stunning amount of traffic for an Internet startup which launched only in June 2011. But the statistic that’s really impressive is that viewers spend an average of 106 minutes per day on the platform, which is kind of a big deal when you factor in the huge number of users.

At its core, Twitch is a video platform & community for gamers. Regardless of whether you’re playing a retro game or the latest sports franchise game or first-person shooter title, Twitch allows you to broadcast the game, watch broadcasts by other gamers, & chat while you’re at it.

It captures the very essence of video & console gaming, which is basically two or more people getting together for a few hours (ok – endless hours) of action, adventure, roleplay & fun. It’s the Online equivalent of a group of friends getting together for a game-a-thon, talking about who’s doing what & what’s new in the game & who got fragged, who got owned, who’s got the highest score, & so on.

The broadcasts are recorded & archived, which means you or anyone else can watch it again afterwards. This, along with the neat categorization of broadcasts into channels, makes Twitch a growing Youtube for gamers.

Their recent growth has mostly been fueled by the integration of Twitch into the Sony PlayStation 4. Two months after PS4 was launched by Sony, a full 20% of Twitch broadcasters were PS4 users.

With Xbox One users joining the flow, expect another huge bump & a whole new set of Twitch console gaming broadcasters & viewers.

The Twitch platform is owned & operated by San Francisco, USA-based Twitch Interactive, Inc. (formerly Justin.tv, Inc.). Last year in September, the company secured US $20 million in a Series C funding round led by WestSummit Capital & Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. This adds to the earlier $15 million in Series B funding in Sept 2012, adding up to a total of $35 million.
