Instant messaging client Flamingo for Mac claims to make Online life simpler

flamingoapplogoFlamingo is a native instant messaging client for OS X that supports Google Hangouts, Facebook messaging & XMPP, among other things.

Thing is that many feel Google Hangouts, while a great communication medium, still lacks the convenience of a desktop instant messaging client. You have to leave Chrome open, & install the Hangouts extension.

Some may argue that it’s no different than keeping an IM client open, but it makes a difference for those who are used to having an IM client for chatting & messaging.

Flamingo for Mac steps into this void with a native client that not only supports Google Hangouts & Facebook messaging, but also integrates all your contacts across different platforms in a very smart & flexible manner.

The all-in-one design ensures that everything from your contacts to conversations & messages are integrated into a single window. You can also split multiple conversations into adjacent windows that you can keep within the main window or detach as per your preference.

The ultra-fast search gives you a 3 column results window which you can use to drill down to the conversation you are looking for based on contacts, date & message type (files, tweets, images, & so on).

Speaking of which, Flamingo allows you to open media files from within itself, & offers inline media support for a host of platforms ranging from Youtube, Twitter & Instagram to CloudApp & Dopplr. You can also directly send & receive unlimited files between two computers if both are using Flamingo, without use of an intermediary service.

But the most innovative thing about Flamingo, costing US $9.99, is probably the “Unified Buddies” feature. It’s not uncommon to have the same contacts appear across multiple accounts. If so, what Flamingo does is group them as a single person on your buddy list.

If you’re having a conversation with such a person & they go offline on one account, Flamingo will switch to another one & continue the conversation, so that you can continue to get & send messages regardless of which account is being used at the other end.

Flamingo was developed by Alberta, Canada-based Indragie Karunaratne & designed by New Jersey-based Christian Dalonzo.
