New search engine claims to provide “more accurate and relevant” results than Google

Search engine snipesearch.co.uk is among the top 1000 Websites in the UK based on the number of visitors it receives every day. Popular search engines like Google, Yahoo & Bing rule the roost on the Internet but new search engine SnipeSearch is slowly making its presence felt because its founders say their search engine throws up relevant results without letting commercial factors influence them. And, to be fair, we did conduct some experiments & realized there was some truth in their claim.

new search engineSnipeSearch is based in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire & employs very few staff. It was founded by techies Stephen Driver & Nick Lange. The duo were discussing search engine rankings & results a few years ago & both agreed that many search engines were throwing up skewed results. They often found that the regular sites they used disappeared in the search results for unknown reasons.

Driver & Lange became concerned that search engines may be preoccupied with profit than accuracy, and so decided to launch their own search engine to counter this trend. Initially, SnipeSearch utilized meta tools to provide accurate results after collating data thrown up by other search Websites. But this was an expensive method & Snipesearch also had to rely on its competitors.

This new search engine’s founders thought this was against their core value which was to provide impartial & accurate results. Their goal was not turning a profit. So snipesearch modified its algorithm & started using independent indexing. It still gathers results from other search engines but indexes them using its own system. As a result, SnipeSearch says it provides more options to users & also throws up more results than even Google.

Stephen Driver has claimed that SnipeSearch was becoming popular because it attracted repeat visitors who came to the Site for its accurate results, email service, video search option & the 100,000 songs they could listen to on the search engine’s social network. SnipeSearch also claims to be more secure as it safeguards users’ privacy.

Kimono: Doing away with knowing code to make an app or scraping a Website

You don’t have to learn code to extract structured data from any Website. Recently launched tool  Kimono can help you scrape a Website & turn its data into a web app or API (Application Programming Interface). For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of scraping, here’s a crash course: Web Scraping refers to an application that processes the HTML of a Web page to extract data for manipulation such as converting the Web page to another format (i.e. HTML to WML).

Kimono apparently makes all this quite simple. All you need to do is add a bookmarklet to the bookmark bar of your browser. Then, visit the Website whose data you wish to extract & click on the bookmarklet. Select the structured data you wish to scrape & Kimono will turn it into a web app or API for you.

kimonopageKimono Labs also offers additional services such as hosting data & APIs in the Cloud & running them according to given schedules. The company can provide cached data if the extractor fails or if the source URL does not work.

Many tools try to use visual programming editors to create apps including Google’s Android App Inventor & Microsoft’s Windows Phone App Studio but they can be a bit complicated for lay users. Kimono is an easier tool & has detailed instruction videos that coach newbies on how to go about extracting data effectively.

For example, say its developers, Kimono makes it simple to create Web apps for data such as the most popular tracks on YouTube or movie time schedules at your local theater. One current limitation, however, is that this tool can be used only on non-authenticating Sites (those not requiring passwords). Kimono’s easy usability & effectiveness may transfer the business of making structured APIs from established companies to third-party developers.

Kimono Labs states on its Website that its mission is to provide APIs to enable users make full use of the Web. The company created Kimono to aid entrepreneurs & developers at large companies build the required apps without fretting about how to get the data they need. Webmasters can use Kimono to pipe data from their Website to interested parties without crushing their servers.

Kimono Labs was founded in January this year & is based in Mountain View, CA in the US.
