This messaging app allows users to send selfies instead of stickers or emojis

Like we have been saying here at What’s New On The Net, messaging apps are the flavor of the season. Over the last two months or so, we have profiled several of them here on our Web pages.

But this one from Los Angeles, USA, is definitely off the beaten track. Called React Messenger, this is a selfie-centered messaging app. Yup, you heard right. No need to send stickers or emojis to friends & colleagues. Send your own selfie with your message. Thus, React can claim to be the 1st ever selfie instant messenger. It’s a new way to chat with your real facial expressions in each message. Natural is the way to go, say these guys at React, since facial expressions do say a lot about a person at that moment in time. Messaging’s pivotal moment, perhaps?

This new messaging app effectively turns selfies into sticker emoticons. No need to sift through tons of stickers, or spending time to select one. Just click your face & send it across. Stick your tongue out at a friend or show off those new pair of sun glasses. Emotions, after all, say a lot about who or what you are.

Launched in November 2013, like they say on their own blog, React Messenger was then “an unfinished, unpolished, buggy little messaging app with lots of design flaws” But the response it got apparently was staggering. Within a month itself, React Messenger was downloaded 100,000 downloads.

Using the smartphone camera, instant reactions allow users to reply with selfies at the tap of a button. They can send double-sided photos or selfies instantly. And old messages get auto deleted, making way for new ones.

From what we hear, this new messaging app is going great guns in some of the Asian countries.

For now, React is available only as an iOS app & can be downloaded on any Apple device with iOS 7.0 or more.

FaceSnap photo app snaps selfies and group pictures for you

FaceSnap is a new iOS photo app that takes your selfie & pictures of your friends & family by itself whenever the camera is focused on a face.

It doesn’t just snap a picture, because it’s actually a burst of pictures over a short interval. You can set the number of images to be taken with the help of the configurable self-timer. FaceSnap can even choose the best picture out of the lot & discard the rest. Think of it as more of a camera assistant.

Obviously, the main advantage is that you’re not stuck behind the camera taking pictures while the rest of your gang is having fun, & then having to see all the photos later on without you in them.

facesnapscreenshotOne of the features of  FaceSnap is it can be integrated with Motrr’s Galileo robotic motion platform. This makes it much more than just a photo app. Which means your iPhone or iPod will automatically pan & tilt when searching for faces & track them when it is installed in a Motrr robotic motion platform. FaceSnap includes also a promo code for 10% discount in the Motrr webshop. Though, you may even use FaceSnap  without a Motrr Galileo.

When combined with Galileo, you can make it search for faces using 5 different Galileo search strategies, & then pan & tilt your iPhone or iPad to take the best pictures. It will even remember the faces it snaps, & can then follow the people around once the app discovers their faces. The app offers front & back camera support, & has presets for taking selfies, use as a party camera, or for room surveillance.

Under the selfie preset, it snaps 3 images using the front camera with a five second gap between each picture. In the party camera mode, it slowly scans the whole room, & takes a burst of 5 images when it detects a face, & then saves the best picture out of the lot. Under surveillance mode, it randomly scans the room & takes a single picture if it bumps into a face.

Of course, you don’t necessarily need to use the photo app with Galileo. It’ll work just fine on its own to snap your selfie or a group shot since all you have to do is bring your face in front of it.

FaceSnap has been developed by Eurasburg, Germany-based Appologics UG. It was free until last week, but is now available for download on the App Store for $0.99.
