5 million Gmail passwords published Online but Google says no breach

The Russians maybe at it again. This time, someone’s posted leaked Gmail addresses & passwords on a Russian Bitcoin Security forum called BTCsec.com. But don’t go about panicking just yet, the good news is that even if your Gmail address is on the list, the password may be too old for concern.

Gmail account leak

According to Online reports, the “leaked” Gmail data were most likely compiled through phishing scams, use of weak passwords & other such compromises, not as a result of a hacked Google server. Similar databases of email addresses and passwords from Yandex and Mail.ru, two popular Russian-language services, were made public earlier this week.

Google has outright denied that its servers had been compromised in any way. Google has informed many Sites that the publication of the Gmail passwords & addresses could be because of hacking & phishing attempts that stole data from individual users. The search giant insists it takes user data issues as very serious & has the best possible checks in place to prevent any leaks from its end.

For our readers who would want to anyway check whether their Gmail accounts are on the list published, this Site – isleaked.com – will help them verify that immediately.

Social sharing service Buffer hacked

Social media sharing tool Buffer has been hacked. What’s New On The Net got an email from CEO Joel Gascoigne giving the details: Not everyone who has signed up for Buffer has been affected, but you may want to check on your accounts. We’re working hard to fix this problem right now and we’re expecting to have everything back to normal shortly.

We’re posting continual updates on the Buffer Facebook page and the Buffer Twitter page to keep you in the loop on everything.

Joel has advised Buffer users to take the following steps immediately:

  • Remove any postings from your Facebook page or Twitter page that look like spam
  • Keep an eye on Buffer’s Twitter page and Facebook page

The silver lining is Buffer passwords are not affected, neither has billing or payment information affected or exposed. All Facebook posts sent via Buffer have been temporarily hidden and will reappear once the situation has been resolved.
