8 tips to be an effective guest blogger

Although guest blogging is a tried and trusted method of gaining recognition, it isn’t always a roaring success and only those with the ability to write compelling and useful content will survive. If you are interested in guest blogging, read on to learn 8 essential tips that should help you impress your latest audience.

1 – Specificity

Don’t try to be a Jack of all trades because you’ll find that masters of one fare much better in the field of guest blogging. Just like lawyers and doctors tend to find a specialist area to concentrate on, you need to do the same when writing. The obvious solution is to blog about the topic you are most interested in and keep a laser like focus.

2 – Simplicity is Effective

While writing flowery prose seems necessary to show off your skills and is also tremendous fun, focusing on crisp and clean content without spelling and grammatical errors is the best way to proceed. Even if you can write at a PhD level, this isn’t always advisable since you want your blog posts to be easily read by everyone. Also, don’t be a slave to word count; your post should be as long as it needs to in order to get the message across, no more and no less.

3 – Be Fresh & Creative

It goes without saying that you need to avoid plagiarism so use Copyscape or a similar tool to avoid embarrassment. You should certainly look at other bloggers in your niche to find ideas for content but don’t start ripping people off! This makes a mockery of their hard work and also ruins your reputation. I would also advise you to add some of your unique personal insights into everything you write so readers can get an idea of what you’re really like. This also helps to distinguish you from other writers.

4 – Don’t Be Obsessed By Links & Search Engines

Too many guest bloggers use a host of backlinks in a bid to promote their own site and also focus on keyword density when creating quality content should be the primary goal. The best way to gain a following is to consistently and frequently write high quality content. Well written blog posts tend to have enough keywords and besides, Google’s latest algorithms mean that there is a greater emphasis on user experience than ever before.

5 – Write Compelling Content

Look through all the successful guest bloggers online and you’ll discover that they have one thing in common; each of them has written content that delivers useful information either for consumers, businesses or both. You need to understand that the modern generation of Internet users expect easily scannable content that has a clear purpose and provides useful information to customers. Don’t waste time and effort with empty paragraphs, outline your key points in an easy to read manner and you’ll be well on the way to success.

6 – Be Compliant

By this I mean that you must comply with the rules of the blog site you wish to guest post on. It is your duty to find out the terms and conditions of each individual blogging site as the stipulations will vary. If you decide to write while ignoring the site’s requirements, don’t be surprised when your post is rejected.

Pay special attention to the link exchange rules on each blogging site as this is likely to play a big role in whether or not your post gets accepted. As long as you play ball and produce high quality writing, virtually all blogging sites will gladly take your content.

7 – Aim Lower

While you should certainly ‘shoot for the stars’, it is better to focus on blogging sites with low Page Rank before looking to be accepted by major sites such as TechCrunch or Mashable. Low PR sites are more likely to publish your content for a start and this in turn helps build your online reputation.

When you begin getting your posts published, you will also learn more about your own writing and this should result in major improvements over the course of time. Once you have cut your teeth with the little fish, you can try and get published by the sharks.

8 – Communicate with Readers

This is absolutely crucial if you want to make a success of guest blogging. It is always a good sign if people comment on what you write as this means they are actually reading it! If readers have queries, do your best to answer them and also listen to any ideas they may have on improving your writing skills.

While there will be discouraging comments, it is necessary to develop a thick skin and listen rather than going into a sulk. When you communicate with readers, you develop a rapport and increase trust. Just observe what the most successful guest bloggers do and follow suit.

Hopefully, you will have learned some valuable tips on succeeding in the competitive world of guest blogging. It won’t be easy to climb the ladder but persevere and an improved reputation and greater recognition could be your rewards.
